Technology for Particle Board Manufacturing from cotton stalk PDF Print E-mail

Particle BoardParticle Board is a panel product produced by compressing small particles of wood while simultaneously bonding them with an adhesive. The various types of particle boards differ greatly with regard to the size and geometry of the particle, the amount of resin (adhesive) used and the density to which the panel is pressed. The properties and potential uses of board differ with these variables. Particle board has emerged as a versatile substitute for wood in many applications such as panelling, partitioning, false ceiling, furniture making, etc. In building construction, particle board finds its application for decorative and acoustic purposes, AC duct covering, door panel inserts, wall panels, floor ceiling tiles, etc. In transportation sector, particle board is used in the railways for chairs, partitioning and sliding doors, etc. Apart from this, these boards find use in making “Printing Blocks”.

The production of particle boards has shown an average growth rate of 15.5% per annum during last decade as against a growth rate of 70% per annum for wood products and of plywood at 5% per annum. Considering the past growth rate, usage pattern, the actual demand for particle boards is expected to be around 95,000 tonnes, where as the supply position is not even 60% of the demand. Hence there is a good market potential for particle board in our country.

The Process :
The process of particle board preparation involves chipping of stalks, grinding of particles to suitable mesh size in a pulveriser, mixing with suitable binder and catalyst, adjusting the moisture content, mat formation and pressing between the heated platens of a hydraulic press to form the board. By using different chemicals and additives, along with binder these boards can be made water proof, fire proof, termite resistant, etc.
The hot pressed boards are subsequently cooled and kept overnight to attain
